As part of a commission from Victoria Baths in Manchester, I held a series of local workshops with members of The Booth Centre for the homeless, exploring the beneficial process of dancing to music, and the act of reconnecting ourselves with our environment. On the final workshop, a few willing participants from the Booth Centre joined me for a Day of Dancing (title of the piece) and we danced to our favourite music in a number of meaningful locations across Manchester. The work shown at the exhibition will be video documentation from this Day of Dancing; 6 individual video portraits and 1 group portrait, shown simultaneously on 7 portable TVs.
The project uses the act of dancing – of making decisive movements, making contact with the ground – to explore how we can reconnect with a bigger environment and reconnect with society.
‘A Day of Dancing’ is about dancing oneself out of a negative situation, creating a positive situation, and using the body to clear the mind. This is a connective process and a reactive process.
